2024 SOS Annual Appeal

Dear Friend of SOS,

Thank you for your past generosity! With your support, SOS was able to open Unity Kitchen one year ago. Since opening, we’ve served 75,320 meals to 1,190 unique individuals.

By year’s end, with your continued support, we will have served 78,000 meals.

From newborn infants to the nonagenarian elderly, our clients are fed and nourished with over 6,000 meals a month. Your kindness goes to hardworking day laborers and farming employees who arrive early for pre-packaged food from our community refrigerator, along with a quick cup of coffee, before heading off to their jobs. Your support helps mothers, with children and grandparents living with them, to stretch their limited resources. These multi- generational families, 55% of whom are Latino, come to Unity Kitchen daily to obtain healthy meals with fresh fruit and vegetables. Your contribution helps our homeless clients avoid the anguish of hunger, and allows us to deliver 450 meals a month to homebound clients.

SOS is able to do all this with a dedicated staff, committed Board members, and over 100 volunteers, all of whom are committed to treating our clients with compassion. Each day an average of over 90 people come through Unity Kitchen’s doors.

After a visit to Unity Kitchen, Sonoma Police Chief Brandon Cutting commented “Watching the interaction between everyone was such a wonderful experience. … (After seeing) the vast community that comes through the doors of that amazing facility several times a day, I understand that you all are heroic in this work.”

In just one year, SOS’s Unity Kitchen has become a hub of hope. In addition to distributing meals, we also provide access to multiple safety-net social service organizations and local nonprofits.

The needs of our community have continued to grow, and we are committed to ensuring that our service capacity expands to meet those needs. SOS Board members and staff have been engaged in strategic planning for our future. A consultant has interviewed stakeholders and gathered data to guide us as we formulate a plan for succession and sustainability.
