Dear Friend of SOS,
I received this report, from Kathy Carver, Sonoma Expansion Manager at ExtraFood:
“This week two employees from Sacramento-based CalRecycle received an informal tour of ExtraFood’s food recovery operations in the Sonoma Valley. Also in attendance was Kristen Sales from Zero Waste Sonoma and Elise Gonzalez from Catalyst. They were able to participate in a food pickup from Safeway, watch the food being weighed and logged by ExtraFood’s driver, Damian, followed by a delivery to SOS Unity Kitchen. Dan, SOS head chef, was there to walk everyone through a morning’s activities and show them the community fridge. Wesley and Scott from CalRecycle will have lots of great information to take back to their team about one of the most unique and successful food recovery programs in California, based right here in the Sonoma Valley!”
This is so important, because SOS is receiving an average $36,167 worth of recovery food each month. We use 20% of the food to make our meals, and 80% goes into our community fridge. In the last month, an average of 124 people have visited SOS Unity Kitchen daily. |
