Weekly Update: April 26, 2025

Dear Friend of SOS,

As we focus on our mission of feeding those who are hungry ,food deprived, and unhoused in Sonoma and Sonoma Valley, it is important to note how many of those we serve are older adults – in particular, the homebound elderly to whom we deliver 100 meals twice a week.

This past week we took a survey of the 20 households that receive meals. We asked their age and what we could do better to serve them. We were startled to discover that many of them were very elderly. We also have noted from our intake information that a large number of seniors come to Unity Kitchen for one healthy meal a day or send a caregiver or family member to pick up the meal. Some of them have underlying health issues, which we are trying to address with the portions and type of food we provide.

Here are some responses from home delivery recipients:

Joaquin G (85): “The desserts are often very good! Sometimes too starchy: I’m a diabetic! The salads help me a lot! The delivery people are very pleasant and efficient.”

Pegalee B (77): “I want you all to know how much we appreciate the cooks, donors, drivers & etc. Food portions are appropriate. I value your services.”

Katie B (77): “Very appreciative! Noodles don’t need as much cheese sauce for me – but no complaints – salad very fresh.”

John B (78): “Excellent. Delivery people are friendly.”

Here are some photos of our dedicated volunteer drivers, heading out to deliver meals to the homebound.

The English poet, Robert Browning, wrote, “Grow old along with me. The best is yet to be.”  At Unity Kitchen we are trying our best to help those who are growing older have a good life and nutritious meals to sustain them.

Please make a donation and help SOS continue our mission of serving the most vulnerable in our community!
